Project by Project’s 4th Annual Food & Wine Tasting Benefit showcases talented chefs from the best restaurants in Los Angeles as well as celebrated wineries. We are pleased to announce our benefit event chair Akira Hirose of Maison Akira and honorary benefit chair Kerry Heffernan of Hudson Yards Catering (formerly of Eleven Madison Park Restaurant, New York)
All net proceeds go to our 2006 partner, Visual Communications (VC). Visual Communications was created with the understanding that the media and arts should do more than just present pictures or portraits; they should take an active role in building a more humane, responsible and understanding society. Visual Communications’ mission is to promote intercultural understanding through the creation, presentation, preservation and support of media works by and about Asian Pacific Americans. Through VC’s programs in video training, production and assistance for artists, public screenings, and preservation of the Asian Pacific American community’s visual history, Visual Communications strives to connect communities through the media arts.

3) India through the Eyes of Conquerors

The Norton Simon Museum’s collection of South Asian art provides a comprehensive view of the religious and artistic landscapes encountered by aspiring conquerors of India in the late 12th century. In this lecture, independent scholar Alka Patel discusses how these newcomers from the isolated highlands of Afghanistan were little prepared for the rich iconographies of India, the birthplace of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism.

Tateo Takahashi (Tsuguru Shamisen), Francis Wong (flute), Doug Hirai (electric guitar) and a five member Odori/Kumi (dance/drum) ensemble will share history and stories by translating the symbolic language of movement and dance with spoken word and visual deconstruction.

5) Hammer Conversations: Yoshihiro Tatsumi & Adrian Tomine

Legendary Japanese comic artist and manga-ka (“manga expert”) Yoshihiro Tatsumi is credited for establishing gekiga (“dramatic pictures”), a style of alternative comics that blends drama and art in a realistic fashion for an adult audience.
A pioneer of the graphic novel, Tatsumi has been drawing comics since the 1950s. His works have been rarely available for American audiences until his most recent collection, The Push Man and Other Stories, edited by Tomine, was published last September.
Comic artist and graphic novelist Adrian Tomine has published many comic books, which include 32 Stories: The Complete Optic Nerve Mini-Comics, She Read the Letter Journal, and the critically acclaimed Summer Blonde. In addition to being featured on many album covers, his works have been included in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and Time.

Part of the 66th Annual Nisei Week Festival
The LA Tofu Festival is a fundraiser for the Little Tokyo Service Center, a non-profit community-based organization, which has been providing services to low income, immigrant, homeless and distressed seniors and families for over 25 years. Programs include assistance to victims of domestic violence, support groups, child abuse and neglect outreach, emergency food and shelter assistance, affordable housing, and community redevelopment. The Little Tokyo Service Center services the diverse, multi-ethnic population of greater Los Angeles.

9) 66th Annual Nissei Week Japanese Festival

The 66th Nisei Week Japanese Festival will be held from August 12-20, 2006 in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo district with many fun-filled, family friendly events. Nisei Week has arranged with the City of Los Angeles to have plenty of public parking in and around the Little Tokyo area. Nisei Week will be held in conjunction with the Tofu Festival the first weekend, August 12-13. This year, leading up to the festival this summer, the Nisei Week Hoops Tournament (June 23-25), Nisei Week Fashion Show (June 10), and Nisei Week Baby Show (July 22) will be held.
The Nisei Week Fashion Show, which will benefit both Nisei Week and Keiro Senior Healthcare, is back this year and will be held June 10 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Each team member must sign a waiver, and teams must have a minimum of 4 persons per team. The cost is $4.00 per person to enter. Cash Prizes will be awarded along with a 1st place team trophy and medallions, 2nd place, and 3rd place, Team Trophy. Singing Contest (Pinoy Idol) – Saturday & Sunday, July 29th & 30th, at Cecil Avenue Park. Youth and Adult amateur singing contest will highlight the weekend. Philippine Weekend entertainment will include Filipino Cultural Dances, Live performances from Filipino Artist and other special guests. Bingo – Saturday, July 29th, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, July 30th, Noon to
7:30 p.m., at the Delano High School Cafeteria. This fund-raiser will benefit the
Delano High School cheerleaders. Cards will cost 50 cents for one or three for $1
per game. Two-thirds money collected each game goes to the winner. Come support
our Delano High School cheerleaders!
